" The most important article of clothing is a hat. " Really? The single most important article of clothing? Meaning, if you had to choose, you'd rather have a hat than a coat? Than boots? Okay, but I can't see my way to calling a hat even the seventh most important article of clothing.

...In fact, it's got to be pretty close to the LEAST most important. I'd give up my underwear first (but not if it's thermal), and probably my gloves, but that's about it. What do you wear that is less vital than a hat?

So much rubbish is talked about hats. Let me assure you, a naked person does not lose 70% of his warmth through the head. That so-casually tossed around figure applies to people who are fully bundled up, but have neglected their headgear. A warm hat may be the most OVERLOOKED article of winter clothing. It is certainly not the most IMPORTANT. It is almost certainly overlooked so often precisely because it is relatively unimportant. How often have you gone out into the woods in the winter without pants?
